frequently asked printing questions - InterPress

Why should I print in Hong Kong?

You can have high quality printing for as much as 30 - 50% less than the cost to print domestically. Major publishers have been printing in Hong Kong for many years. Just like many other high quality products purchased from Asia.

Is the printing quality as good as in North America?

Over the years manufacturing has shifted for a number of goods, to the Asian market. Hong Kong and China have become one of our biggest suppliers for all kinds of manufactured goods. Quality printing is essential for the scrutinizing American public. High quality art books, travel books and reference books for universities are mostly produced in Asia because of the high quality and low cost.

Do I have to know a lot about printing to work with you?

Not necessarily, we have an experienced staff to work with you on your project. We will help guide you with helpful suggestions for everything from what paper to use to the best kind of binding. In addition, we provide samples of all materials that will be used before we begin production.

What is the minimum order?

There is no minimum order. However, the cost to set up a press is the same for 100 copies as it is for 2,000 copies so you will experience a greater savings for a larger number of copies. We usually recommend that an order of 2,500 copies will save you a significant amount of money.

Can you print directly to plate?

Yes, this is fairly new technology and is known as filmless printing. We can take your files and provide you with digital proofs that will be used for color guidance on press. When printing with this method, it’s important that your files are prepared correctly and we provide guidelines to help you with the setup. An example of a project printed directly to plate is Racing to the Table.

How long does it take for completion of a project including delivery?

It depends on how printing is done and the size of the project. If you want to print directly to plate, we can deliver a project in approximately 9 weeks. If we need to supply film and proofs, this could add another 3-4 weeks to a schedule.

Can you deliver to my door?

Yes, we can take care of importation through customs and coordinate delivery to your door. We have good relationships with trucking companies that take the shipment from the port of entry to complete the delivery

What if I want to pick up the shipment myself?

You can do so. Once the shipment arrives, you can pick it up at the customs port yourself. When your job is nearing delivery we contact you to let you know the date it will be ready for pickup. We can also help coordinate customs clearance if needed.

What happens if my shipment is damaged in transit?

Before booking your shipment we make sure to have adequate insurance to cover any damages while in transit. Claims are processed through the insurance company's local office and handled quickly. If we take care of the delivery to your door, the shipment will be insured for the entire journey. If you choose to use your own “to the door” delivery service, make sure that you have insurance for this portion of the trip.

Is there a problem with the language difference?

No, our production staff in Hong Kong is very well versed in English. You can communicate either directly with someone on our production team in Hong Kong or with one of our representatives in the U.S.

Can you ship to countries other than the U.S.?

Yes, Hong Kong is a large shipping port with deliveries to almost every country in the world regularly. Many of our clients have shipments going to European countries as well as to Australia and New Zealand. We delivered the Solutions & Services Directory to several countries including Australia, Canada, the UK, France, Spain, Hong Kong, and the USA.

Can you print in different languages?

Yes, we can print in any language that you provide the files for. Sometimes we print the same book in two languages by creating a black plate change for the text. This way both books can be delivered at the same time.

What about specialty packaging, can you help with it?

We can work with you on ideas that you have and also suggest some. For example, one job required a slipcase that we designed. On another, we enclosed a CD disk on an inside cover. There was a project where we packaged cards and an instruction book together. We have a team of creative experts with experience in this field.

I have a book that needs to be reprinted, can I work with you?

In most countries outside North America, Right Reading Emulsion Down positive film is used. If your job was printed in North America, your film is most likely Negative film. We can convert this to positive film and then print without a problem.

Do you have the facility to scan my artwork?

Yes, we have state-of-the-art prepress equipment that can reproduce your images very close to the original. We provide press proofs on the paper and with the ink that will be used on press for the best possible match that you can get.
